OsteopathyIn the UK, an estimated 24,000 people consult osteopaths every working day. This amounts to nearly 7 million consultations each year. Osteopaths are providing over 850,000 more consultations per year since 1997 and over 1.7 million more than in 1994. Whilst over 85% of people still fund themselves, private health insurance now accounts for 10.4%, an increase from 7% in 1997. Back pain is one of the most common ailments diagnosed by GPs, affecting 80% of the population in the UK and costing the nation £6 million a year in lost working days and healthcare costs. Therefore back pain will affect 4 out 5 people at some point in their lives, and is the most common complaint treated by osteopaths. All osteopaths are legally required to be registered members of the General Osteopathic Council.
